Alcohol Purchases Restricted in Australia

By Ash Pini

This morning Australians are waking up to the news that the purchase of alcohol has been limited in all states except Western Australia.

Today, March 31, new alcohol purchasing limits came into force across the country, with the exception of Western Australia, through participating retailers: including Dan Murphys, Coles Liquor, Cellarbrations, Liquor Stax, BWS, and Aldi. The limits are aimed at stopping bulk buying and to encourage responsible drinking. Beer drinkers, for example, will be limited to a two-case purchase.

Quick to point out that there are no supply issues, Retail Drinks Australia CEO Julie Ryan said, “we know that consumers like to feel (the) certainty of supply during times of crisis, and our members (the stores) want to do their part to encourage people continuing to purchase alcohol responsibly as they normally would.

“Our suppliers in breweries, wineries, distilleries and the wholesale and distribution of drinks continue to be fully operational and this means there are no issues of supply. However, it was clear that uncertainty on the impact of supply following the closure of pubs, clubs, and restaurants last week caused some people to purchase differently.

“These temporary measures will ensure that all consumers can continue to access their favourite drinks when they decide to make a purchase.”

So what does that mean to you?

You can buy from a maximum of two categories (below) with limitations in each category. The restrictions apply in all states except Western Australia.

Beer: 2 cases.

Cider: 2 cases.

Pre-mix: 2 cases

Spirits: 2 bottles

Wine: 12 bottles

Cask Wine: 2 casks, not to exceed 10 litres
