Barossa = wine in the minds of most Australians, yet the region’s newest venture is set to change that perception.
Seppeltsfield Road Distillers, the area’s first artisan gin house, officially opened last week to much excitement.
Owned and operated by locals Nicole and Jon Durdin, the distillery aims to showcase regionally sourced ingredients through its three gin expressions.
A former police officer and professional musician, the idea for the distillery came to Nicole when she was living in the UK with Jon and unsure of her career path. She wanted to find something that united her and Jon’s interest in travel, culture, music, food and great gin.
“The idea for Seppeltsfield Rd Distillers was born in Winchester, UK where we lived for Jon’s work,” she says. “I was in the middle of a career crisis and so we dabbled with the idea of starting a distillery. Within a matter of months, we had purchased the land and a Carl still from Germany, and there was no turning back!”
Nicole’s main focus in setting up the distillery has been in the development of the quality gin product, while Jon has dedicated his efforts to the growth of the business and its facilities, namely its scenic tasting room on Seppeltsfield Road, Marananga.
“It’s a wonderful location and we feel very fortunate to be able to offer something a little different in the Barossa. We’ve been trading now for almost five weeks and there is a terrific energy in the tasting room,” says Jon.
Visitors are invited to sit at the bar and have a guided tasting of the gins while overlooking the crafting process or undertake a self-driven tasting on the deck, with its sweeping views of the Barossa.
Gin flights are available from $15 and include the three bespoke gins: the House Gin, with notes of fresh citrus and subtle juniper along with hints of chamomile and lavender; the Barossa Dry, a classic London Dry style with flavours of juniper and coriander together with the subtle taste of pink peppercorn; and the Savoury Allsorts, a uniquely savoury gin with herbaceous notes of thyme, marjoram, borage and gentian.
Gin & tonics and gin cocktails are also on the menu, as well as grazing plates featuring quality local and international produce.
